Like a million bucks

It recently came to my attention that I was published (for the 2nd time) on the certified Rich Kids of Instagram account (Cue in the flood of haters please, thank you).

But as 90’s pop culture queen Paris Hilton once said “There is no such thing as bad publicity”. With all that said, I must confess, being on the receiving end of such hatred does sting, and being compared to jobless trust fund babies is nothing to be proud of especially during such troubling times.

Growing up in a small town in Mexico, didn’t allow for unlimited creative expression, and so I fled to find my story away from many narrow-minded individuals. I wanted to succeed in the world of fashion but everything I did and everything I have has been earned through hard work and with a goal in mind. My parents granted me amazing opportunities and support but it was me alone who sought a fashion career that put me on the front rows of Fashion Week.

Going through the RKOI page all I could see was the offspring’s of the 1% displaying their opulent wealth. I truly wish that you don’t see me as a spoiled brat whose main job is to post instagrams of himself drinking champagne in private planes. If people took the time to read they would see that not everything I wear is designer. Yes, I like luxury, sue me! But who doesn’t aspire for the finest things in life?

Luxury is part of fashion but it is not everything. Fashion doesn’t mean you have to spend thousands of dollars to look like a million bucks.

Don’t believe me?

EXAMPLE: My favorite look for Milan Fashion Week

¿No me crees?

I am back New York ❤️

I was trying to explain my job as a digital influencer and someone at the table mentioned being like Demi Moore’s movie “The Joneses”. In the movie the family persuades the whole neighborhood into a perfect material life that doesn’t exist.

That got me thinking…

Is designer bags all you see in me? Am I only lurking you into believing that a perfect life exists?

Sorry to break it to you but my life isn’t perfect. I constantly fear the instability of a digital job. The daily struggle between family, friends and work. A different profession where new information is being delivered daily. And of course the competition of wanting to keep up.

I just really hope you find more in my words and pictures than fancy clothes. I hope that I am able to inspire your own truth. To believe in yourselves, break boundaries, stereotypes, and above all to believe in the power of your dreams when you work hard for them.

No one is perfect but in that effort to achieve perfection you will find your own best. And that is quite alright.

With love,

Neto

Neto

FASHION MEETS MUSIC

In my recent travels I had the amazing opportunity to visit Mexico City and while in Mexico I was able to interview one of Mexico’s most prominent star. The one and only Julio Ramirez member of the musical group Reik. After taking a walk around Condesa we finally started digging into the important stuff and here are some things I bet you didn’t know about Julio.

DSC_0504

How did your career begin?

I met up with Jesus, the lead singer of Reik and we started making demos at age 16. Shortly after we were signed by Sony everything started escalating very quickly, we were very fortunate.

How do you see the influence music has in fashion?

As music evolves, how you feel about a record, or how a specific melody makes you feel so does clothing. I really like to give a modern touch to my outfit and I think that is something reflected in my music.

DSC_0308

Your favorite designer of the moment?

Right now I would have to say Cesar Arellanes, Mexican fashion designer from Chihuahua with more than 20 years working in Los Angeles proposing a very edgy vibe dressing Justin Bieber and Demi Lavatto among others. I think he will be dressing me for my tour and concerts I am a huge fan.

What is the social network you like the most?

I like Instagram, a place where artistic people, photographers, models and especially bloggers work to have a voice in the industry. I think that in Instagram people tend to be more real to their persona and can freely express themselves.

Favorite fashion city?

I think I need to travel more to decide, our music is heard in Mexico, USA, Central and South America. New York has always been one of the cities that have recently inspired me so much that I decided that someday I will live there just for the experience.

DSC_0577

Any fashion icons that inspire you?

Paul McCartney, he is elegance, classy, cool and love his music. He has a lot to offer and if by the age of 60 I look like that WOW.

Any stories from you childhood you feel that changed you?

When I was in 5th grade I realize who was good looking and who wasn’t. I believed I was very handsome and actually started behaving very entitled as if my face would get my anywhere. The years went by I matured and realized that everything is fleeting and that beauty isn’t forever, there will always be someone better than you so never take things too seriously.

Where would you like to settle?

I am very homey I would happily grow a family in San Diego, California have my studio, go jogging on the beach. My parents will still be very close that’s very important to me a traditional part that always will be with me.

What would be the soundtrack of your life right now?

Any Beatle’s album but I do have a very special one. Ennio Morricone – Love Theme, I never get tired of listening I really encourage you to hear it.

Photographers on one side fashionitas on the other and street style are the pictures of choice when it comes to Fashion Week.

How can I start to explain how the most important week of the season for fashionitas all over the world works? Between backstage and front rows here are 10 rules every one should follow in order to keep and maintain your cool on the seasons most hectic yet glamorous week.

#1. Sunshine is a big spot on you. It shows all the mistakes. (AVOID at all coats cheap fabrics, ruined accessories, and dirty shoes)

#2. Don’t match clothes and its own function. Like rain and trenchcoat or snow and moonboot, FORGET IT leave the umbrella at home!

#3. Be careful with black. DON’T put together different tones of black; materials reflect the black in different ways.

#4. Wear just nightclothes in daytime. It is UNEXPECTED!

#5. DON’T carry big bags. (On the front row they hinder the passage)

#6. ALWAYS check the weather. Clothes live in the best context.

#7. SHAPE UP! You must choose outfits fierce and fully shaped.

#8. Pay attention de DETAIL. Even if you think people aren’t watching, a good ACCESSORY is worth a thousand words.

#9. EXPIREMENT! Fashion Week is the time of the season you can dress up and none of the others can say anything about it.

#10. CONFIDENCE and a SMILE are a MUST! No matter how tired you are or how crazy you’ve looked when fighting for your cab confidence and smiles are only here to enhance you wardrobe of choice.

Overalls 101:

In case you didn’t get the memo, overalls are back, and they have been for a while. Not only is it this trend from the 80’s and 90’s insanely comfortable, but they are also practical and incredibly stylish. Bib overalls were, and still are the everyday apparel for some people. They were perceived as a uniform for the working masses, especially those in agriculture. And are perhaps the most versatile of transition items by allowing you to show others that you have something cool going on, whether it’s a layer underneath, or on top of them. Either way it’s pure genius.

Farmers, who really had it down before any of us, originally used them but the denim all-in-one really exploded when Princess Diana embraced it. Lately, luxury denim brands and designers are interpreting the overall in covetable iterations that will banish the words, “she could be a farmer in those clothes”, from any association with the look.

Now that overalls are popping up everywhere again, it seems like few people know how to wear them without looking like they just came from a farm. While sporting a denim onesie seems pretty foolproof (after all, everything matches with denim), figuring out the right shirt, shoes and accessories to pair with your overalls is an art form.

Here are 4 tips to help you look great in your favorite childhood trend:

  1. Leave the plaid at home: For real. This is one instance when wearing a flannel is not okay, unless you’ve been driving a tractor all day.
  1. Stripes, however, are an almost guaranteed home run: Channel your inner sailor with a blue-and-white striped shirt and you’ll look adorable, I promise.
  1. Fit is key: If you have a longer or shorter torso, try and find a pair of overalls with adjustable straps, so there is no gapping (or pulling) in the crotch area.
  1. Believe in yourself: No matter what trend you want to jump on as long as you wear it confident there is no look you cant rock and if you add a dazzling smile you’ve hit the ball out of the park!

Mesh it up

New York’s weather is a disaster right now, it’s so hot and humid that the fashionistas are having trouble turning sweat into a trend. And, now that your’s truly has to stay on the Island working all summer, I came up with a couple of ideas to keep you looking stylish, while not boiling with hot layers. For this look, I would say I went a little over the top with a mesh sweater from Forever21. From the moment I first laid eyes on it, I knew it would be a fun little experiment to see how I would eventually style it. I decided to use this mesh sweater that is 100% polyester because its made up of noncellulosic fibers. Petroleum, coal, natural gas, air and water are used to make this fibers. Meaning that chemist working in laboratories produce various combinations of carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen and oxygen to create many of the fabrics we use today. Here, you can see how I layered it with a basic t-shirt from HB designs (a close friend from back home in Mexico) of #Karlito. Considering that the weather is hot as heck, I had no other option than to show some leg with these short shorts from Zara. Keeping the look very minimal with black and white tones. I accessorized with my white and silver Dior reflective sunnies, my Chanel boy bag, and my Fendi key chain of #Karlito that matches the outfit perfectly. On my feet I played it colorful and added my Bernhard Willhelm x Camper color block sandals, just to add a little summer vibe to the whole black and white look. Remember, if it’s hot, mesh it up to look avant-garde, even though the sun is burning your scalp, lol.

Oh my Dior!

The perfect summer suit can be a little tricky to find, but after a large extend of research (jajaja not really) I found mine at Zara. This royal blue suit is the perfect piece missing for all my summer looks; that blue goes perfectly with everything and I can wear it completely or mix and match the blazer and the pants. For this look I decided to take it down a nudge and actually made it very casual and a little sporty in some sense. Pairing the suit with an amazing t-shirt from a good old friend of mine HB designs was the perfect balance between elegance and a class clown making my outfit “best all around”. My “Oh my Dior!” white t couldn’t be complete with my pair of so real sunnies from Dior, they where like a match made in heaven. Keeping it cool and casual I wore my white super \star Adidas (confession I am obsessed with them and have like 3 pairs) the white kicks stand out amazingly from that royal blue and makes the whole outfit a perfect summer look.
